With beautiful brownstone, pre-Civil war housing combined with one of the fastest developing apartments and office buildings all nestled together, Jersey City is an incredible place to live.
Furry Friends In Hoboken
What do you get if you cross a gold dog with a telephone? A golden receiver!
Now I know that was a little (or very) corny, but it brings me to a very important aspect of life in Hoboken… dogs! It’s hard to go more than a couple steps without seeing someone walking their dog. Since Hoboken is a walking town, it makes perfect sense that there would be as many dogs as there are in this one square mile. Today, Hoboken has been recognized by magazines and newspapers as one of the dog-friendliest cities in New Jersey. Here, dog owners enjoy over a mile of waterfront walkway; miles of safe, tree-lined streets; dog-friendly sidewalk cafes; and many excellent dog walkers and trainers, doggie daycare and boarding facilities, and well-stocked pet-supply shops.
If you are looking for a place to bring your dog where he/she can run free and play with other dogs, dog parks are readily available in Hoboken, with parks in nearly every region of town. Popular parks with separate dog parks include Church Square Park, Elysian Park, Stevens Park, Maxwell Place, and Shipyard Park. Other parks that do not contain separate dog parks, but are dog friendly include Columbus Park, Pier A Park, Pier C Park, and Sinatra Park. However, for parks on the waterfront, dogs are only allowed on the paved sidewalks, not on the lawns, planted beds or gravel areas. Water fountains for dogs are spaced periodically along the walkway.
You might be asking yourself, “I need to go to work! Are there any places where I can drop off my dog for the day and make sure he/she is safe and having fun?” Of course there are! If you are away for long periods of time and are unable to bring your dog with you, Hoboken offers many boarding and daycare facilities for dogs, the most popular of which include Pack Leader Dogs (904 Washington Street), Club Barks (712 Jefferson Street), Whiskers and Leo Pet Care, WufSter, and Playful Paws USA.
Has your dog been an extra good boy/girl lately? Do you think you should reward him/her for their good behavior? If you want to get your furry friend a new toy, Hoboken has a number of pet supply stores that make that possible. The stores include Beowoof Provisions for Pets (106 Fifth Street), Cornerstone Pets (105 Ninth Street), Hoboken Pet (524 Washington Street), and You Lucky Dog (235 Hudson Street). At any of these stores, your dog is sure to find a toy that they’ll love for years to come.
All in all, Hoboken truly is one of the most dog-friendly towns in existence. But always remember, when taking your dog for a walk, or to a dog park, don’t forget to keep your dog on a leash, carry pick-up bags, and dispose of dog waste promptly. Also, you must remember to license your dog annually. According to the City, "failure to comply will result in a mandatory court appearance." Hoboken dog licenses expire on December 31st, regardless of the month they were obtained. New licenses are available from January 1st. If you have a new dog or have not licensed your dog before, you can find the application on the city's website: http://www.hobokennj.org/docs/health/doglicense.pdf
